Feijoa extracts have been shown to have a wide range of benefits in the immune system, it also has anti-inflammatory properties, bone health, and healing thyroid gland diseases.
Dr Andrew Munkacsi, a researcher in the School of Biological Sciences at Victoria University of Wellington working with Hikurangi Enterprises, has discovered compounds in feijoas that act on a protein mechanism linked to Parkinson’s disease and other serious health conditions.
Dr Munkacsi will be presenting his soon-to-be published research at Ina Te Ora Food Futures Tairāwhiti conference this week with a presentation entitled “Fruit peel waste as a source of high value pharmaceutical drugs and agricultural chemicals.”
